Location
The site is located at Toranagallu, adjacent to the steel plant of JSW Steel Limited. Toranagallu is at a distance of 30 kms from Bellary and 35 kms from Hospet, the nearest towns. Bangalore the nearest city, is about 340 kms from Toranagallu. Toranagallu is connected by road and rail to Bellary/Hopset/Bangalore. Site elevation is 478 m above the mean sea level. Toranagallu is located in Daroji Valley formed by Sandur Hills on South, Copper mountains on the East and cluster of small Daroji Hills on the North side. Daroji Hills area is rich in mineral resources such as haematic iron ore and red oxide of iron and manganese. These mineral resources are also found in Sandur Hills and the copper mountain range. Hampi, a tourist spot which attracts tourists from all over the world is located about 13 kms from Hospet. It is situated on the bank of the river Tungabhadra. Once the flourishing capital of the Vijayanagar empire, Hampi was abundant in wealth, military prowess, aesthetic sensibilities and culture. It was visited by travellers from Italy and Arabia during the 15th century. Today, its ruins are spread over an area of 26 sq.kms. The Pampavathi Swami Temple, the Queens bath, the Lotus Mahal, the Stone Chariot and the Musical Pillars of Vittala Temple evoke memories of bygone splendour.
The nearest railway station is Toranagallu. Toranagallu is linked by broadguage rails to port cities like Goa, Mangalore and Chennai. The site is also connected by a link road to the National Highway No.63 linking Ankola and Gooty.

Temperature of ambient air range is 14.6 C to 40.8 C. Relative humidity range is 22% to 73%.
Availability of Water
The make up water is being pumped from the raw water pond of the steel plant at a distance of 2 kms from the power plant. The raw water pond receives water from the Tungabhadra reservoir, which is located at about 40 kms from the site.
Land
The power plant site consists of 94 hectares of area. This includes the 12 hectares identified for Ash disposal area.
