Environment Management at JSWEL

Environment management is now an integral function of the operation of any generating company. The operation of a power station has significant impact on the environment, wild life and forestry. Control of the impact through a judicious selection of mitigating technology and system is mandatory.

JSW Energy Ltd. has always been deeply committed towards environment protection. Strict observations of control measures in the plant are taken to avoid deleterious effects on the environment. The plant has invested over Rs.90 crores in various environmental protection schemes.

JSWEL has installed the state of the art process technology for abatement of pollutants at source.

The plant has embarked on the process of training people and developing systems for ISO 14001 Environment Management System.

We have achieved 100% utilization of fly ash and 100% utilization of Bottom ash.

Air Pollution

The plant is designed for 100 % Coal and 100 % Corex gas generated in steel process. The plant has installed Electrostatic Precipitators at the boilers to remove ash from the flue gases let out through the chimney. The ESPs are designed for limiting the SPM emission level well below 150 mg/Nm3 with 100 % Coal firing.

Chimney heights are chosen so as ensure that ground level concentrations of pollutants in the surrounding environment remains well below the permissible limits. The ambient air quality in and around the plant and surroundings is better than the statutory norms.

Tangential firing with over fire air damper is provided to reduce NOx emission. NOx emission level of 1.26 kg/million kcal for 100% coal and 0.36 kg/million kcal for 100% corex gas firing.

In order to ensure that the levels of pollutants are well below the permissible limit, a suitable monitoring programme is implemented and state of art continuous emission monitoring system is provided.

Water Pollution

JSWEL has adopted closed circuit cooling system for process and machinery-cooling purpose to reduce the consumption of water and generation of wastewater. Dry fly ash and bottom ash handling system is implemented and proven to markedly reduce wastewater generation. The cascading of effluent water generated is a concept of JSWEL toward better resource conservation and the entire process water is recycled and effluent quality is maintained well within statutory norms and is utilized for in-house plantation and greenbelt development. JSWEL is zero water discharge company.

Noise Pollution

Due to technological reason, it is not practicable to eliminate noise but the levels have been brought down wherever possible to acceptable levels. The measures for the same include reduction of noise at source by provision of acoustic lining to equipment and providing earplugs for working personnel.

Solid Waste Management

Solid Waste management gets special thrust. We have achieved 60 % utilisation of fly ash and 100 % utilisation of Bottom ash. Company has provided impervious geo-membrane lined ash storage yard for unutilized fly ash, provided sprinklers and organised plantation around the ash storage yard to eliminate fugitivity.

Green Earth

Over 60 Thousand trees have been planted in massive afforestation drives, in 110 acres of land with a motto of plant in forest, include trees of varieties like Teak, Sheesham, Gulmohr, Mahogany etc. The ongoing plantation and development of greenbelt itself proves our commitment and contribution towards maintaining a clean environment, protecting wild life and forestry.

Efficient Resource Utilisation

JSWEL has always worked towards optimal utilisation of natural resources, be it energy sources, water or process raw material.

Efficiency in energy consumption implies better pollution control for any industry. Optimization of energy consumption is a continuous process. JSWEL is using Corex gas generated in as by product in Steel Plant process and coal dust generated in steel plant coal drying process.

With a numbers of innovative steps JSWEL has successfully reduced its rate of consumption of process water and raw materials, even though they appear to have endless supply in popular perception.

Environment Cell

JSW Energy Ltd. has constituted an Environment Cell, as per the directives of the Ministry of Environment & Forests and State Pollution Control Board to monitor environmental aspects.

The plant has earnestly taken up the environment awareness drive through the celebration of events like the Environment Month, Environment Day, etc. in different sections. There has been an overwhelming response for such programmes from the employees. All the employees are trained in the field of environment conservation and protection through specialized training modules designed for this purpose.
